June
Quintiles announces intention to form a joint venture to commercialize products in Asia-Pacific. In addition to Quintiles, the joint venture partners are Interpharma Asia Pacific, parent of drug distributor Zuellig Pharma, and Asia investment company Temasek Holdings (Private) Limited.

Quintiles completes strategic partnership agreement with Aptuit, Inc., whereby Aptuit acquires three Quintiles business units -- Preclinical Services, Pharmaceutical Sciences and Clinical Trial Supplies -- for approximately $125 million. Both companies sign a two-year commercial agreement establishing arrangements to make these early development services available to customers.

Mitsui & Co. becomes a 20% shareholder in Quintiles Transnational Japan K.K. (Quintiles Japan) in a transaction designed to accelerate Quintiles Japan's growth and expand Quintiles and Mitsui's strategic alliance capabilitis in pharmaceuticals, biotechnology and healthcare.

The Quintiles Board of Directors agrees to a merger with Pharma Services Holdings Inc., which will pay public shareholders $14.50 a share. Pharma Services was founded by Dennis Gillings, Ph.D., Chairman of the Board and founder of Quintiles, and One Equity Partners, LLC, the private equity arm of Bank One Corporation. September Shareholders approve merger with Pharma Services Holdings Inc., and Quintiles becomes a private company led by founder and Chairman Dennis Gillings, Ph.D.

Quintiles acquires certain assets of Bioglan Pharma Inc., the U.S. subsidiary of U.K.-based Bioglan Pharma Plc, to further enhance the range of portfolio management solutions Quintiles can offer its customers. May Quintiles and McKesson Corporation form Verispan, an informatics joint venture that is the leading U.S. provider of patient-level, longitudinal data delivered in near real time.

January
Quintiles opens Japan International Desk in Princeton, New Jersey, to further expand world's second-largest pharma market into global economy. Former Takeda executive Mikihiko Obayashi will lead Quintiles' office to help pharma companies expand in Japan and Japanese companies expand abroad.
Quintiles acquires OEC SA, a Swiss-based company that provides drug safety services to the pharmaceutical industry, allowing Quintiles to extend drug safety capabilities throughout the product life-cycle.
February
Quintiles acquires Ungerer Laboratory and Bavaria pd CC, both based in Pretoria, South Africa, expanding Quintiles' globally integrated network of centralized clinical laboratories. April Pamela J. Kirby, Ph.D., joins Quintiles Transnational as chief executive officer. Former CEO Dennis Gillings, Ph.D., who founded the company in 1982, continues as chairman, with Kirby reporting to him.
