Purpose of Scholarship
We consider it important to develop talent in the Biostatistics field and more generally, to invest in the overall education of statisticians. To that end, Quintiles will provide a scholarship to study at the University of Southampton (UK) for an MSc in Statistics with Applications in Medicine. The scholarship will enable one student to study for an MSc. Criteria for Scholarship Selection
To be considered for a scholarship, you will have obtained or will be expecting to obtain an upper-second or first-class honors degree in Mathematics or Statistics, or in a subject with substantial Mathematics / Statistics content. You will be a well-rounded individual who has an interest in developing a career as a Biostatistician in the pharmaceutical services industry. The successful applicant with be invited to Quintiles in Bracknell to encounter a day in the life of a Quintiles Biostatistician.
Scholarship holders may wish to apply for employment at Quintiles at the conclusion of the course, and will be considered for vacancies at that time.
MSc in Statistics with Applications in Medicine
This course provides students with knowledge of applied statistical theory and methods at an advanced level – particularly in areas related to medicine. An important aspect of the course is the development of communication skills which are considered key to a successful career in the pharmaceutical industry.
The twelve-month course consists of an instructional element for the Diploma followed by an extensive three-month individual project for the MSc. The course starts in late September to early October, running over two semesters of instruction in theoretical and applied statistics, with an emphasis on statistical methods in medicine. This part of the course is assessed by coursework and examinations are held at the end of each semester. On achieving a satisfactory standard in the Diploma examinations, students are permitted to undertake a further three months of full-time supervised study and research involving the preparation of a typed and bound dissertation by the end of September. Quintiles will provide a number of potential topics for the dissertation, although the student is free to choose a dissertation topic of their choice from the broader University list.
