Quintiles Executive Vision Forum Series

The transformation of the pharmaceutical industry is firmly underway, but many biopharmaceutical companies are struggling to determine the right path forward.

The Quintiles Executive Vision Forum series is designed to provide an opportunity for senior biopharmaceutical company executives and key opinion leaders to engage in thought-provoking debate and discussion about the most pressing challenges facing the biopharmaceutical industry today

Shaping Clinical Transformation - Princeton, NJ, September 2009

The most recent Executive Vision Forum titled - "Shaping Clinical Transformation"- was held on September 15, 2009 in Princeton, NJ and was attended by more than 20 pharmaceutical and biotechnology company executives

The pharmaceutical industry is confronting systemic game-changing challenges to the fundamentals of the business model, with one of the key manifestations being transformational change in the value chain and operations. The "Shaping Clinical Transformation" event presented a venue for executives and key opinion leaders to better understand the elements of clinical transformation required for a new health care environment.

The evening’s first speaker was Kenneth I Kaitin, Ph.D., Director and Professor of Medicine at the Tufts Center for the Study of Drug Development. Dr. Kaitin is an internationally recognized expert on the science of drug development, and he publishes extensively on the factors that contribute to the slow pace and high cost of pharmaceutical R&D as well as the impact of regulatory and legislative initiatives. Kaitin discussed the myriad of challenges facing biopharmaceutical manufacturers and shared his insight into the industry’s future direction. Among his key observations was the evolving role of CROs from service provider to strategic partner and the need for successful risk mitigation strategies.

Peter Payne, Vice President of NovaQuest, later spoke about such risk mitigation strategies and how a new model built upon shared risk is sorely needed to transform productivity in drug development. Emphasizing the impacts of earnings pressure and legacy systems, Payne presented illuminating case studies in which alternate development strategies and partnerships reduced both the cost and time of a clinical development program.

The final presentation of the evening was given by Sol Babani from Celtic Pharma. Celtic’s unique model of virtual drug development – in which all development work is outsourced – is clinical transformation to the extreme. Babani fielded numerous questions from the clearly intrigued audience, many of whom represented companies experimenting with similar partnering arrangements.

Adrian McKemey, Managing Director in QGC and Head of the US Product Development and Commercialization Practice, moderated the program. His group focuses on business transformation, portfolio management, risk partnering, scenario planning and outsourcing strategies. "This unique program gives industry leaders the opportunity to come together in a special forum to engage in thought-leading discussions about the future of drug development," said McKemey. "The intimate environment and fascinating presentations enabled substantive conversation around a critical topic for our industry."
