RESEARCH TRIANGLE PARK, N.C. - January 16, 2002 - Quintiles Transnational Corp. (Nasdaq: QTRN) today announced the following executive appointment:

Tracy K. Tsuetaki, O.D., as senior vice president, Global Business Development. In this newly created position, Tsuetaki will be responsible for all business development activities involving major pharmaceutical and biotechnology customers worldwide. Tsuetaki joins Quintiles Transnational from Kaiser Permanente's California Division, where he was senior vice president, Strategic Planning and Consulting.

Tsuetaki, 41, will report to Pam Kirby, Ph.D., chief executive officer of Quintiles Transnational. Reporting to Tsuetaki will be global account management, business development and marketing.

"Tracy has a proven track record of excellence in achieving business objectives while leading process improvement and strategic planning initiatives that are vital to short- and long-term business success," Kirby said. "Tracy has a rare combination of leadership skill, customer knowledge and strategic planning expertise -- all of which are necessary to lead our global business development efforts. He's worked with many of our customers as a consultant, and is well aware of the needs of pharma and biotech companies. I'm extremely pleased that he's joining Quintiles Transnational."

Prior to joining Kaiser Permanente, Tsuetaki was a senior manager in Ernst & Young's Life Science Consulting Practice, where he provided strategy and performance consulting for biotechnology and pharmaceutical companies. His broad industry experience also includes positions as director of business development for Corning Pharmaceutical Services (now Covance) and executive director of project management for Ciba-Geigy's Vision Care Group (now Novartis).

Tsuetaki has a master's in business administration from the Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University. He also has a doctorate in optometry and a master's in physiological optics, both from the University of California, Berkeley.
