Dr. Anand Tharmaratnam has extended responsibility for Quintiles’ clinical development and market access businesses across 13 Asia Pacific countries that account for half the world’s population – including China and Japan, the world’s second- and third-largest biopharmaceutical markets, respectively.
Dr. Tharmaratnam joined Quintiles in April 1997 as a Clinical Pharmacologist at Guys Drug Research Unit (London), having spent the previous five years working in anesthesiology and critical care medicine in London. In 1999, he was appointed Medical Director for Quintiles Europe. Two years later, Dr. Tharmaratnam established the Quintiles ECG lab in Mumbai, India – the first global ECG lab outside Europe and the United States. In 2003, he joined Quintiles Japan and was instrumental in setting up international alliances for the business in Hawaii, Brazil and Peru. In August 2004, Dr. Tharmaratnam moved to Singapore and was appointed Chief Executive Officer of Quintiles Southeast Asia, Taiwan and Korea. He has subsequently taken responsibility for all clinical development in Asia.
In March 2015 Dr. Tharmaratnam was honored as “Best Life Science Asian Male Executive of the Year” at the BioPharma Asia Industry Awards in Singapore, having been selected in a vote of biopharmaceutical industry professionals from five distinguished executives shortlisted for the honor.
Dr. Tharmaratnam earned his medical degree (MBBS) from University College London, UK. He is also a member of the Royal College of Anesthetists, UK, (MRCA) sits on the NMRC (National Medical Research Council) Singapore.
