Until relatively recently, the number often quoted as the cost of bringing a new drug to market was $1 billion. In November 2014, the Tufts Center for the Study of Drug Development reported that developing new prescription medicine that gains marketing approval, a process often lasting longer than a decade, is estimated to cost $2,558 billion. Recent analysis shows that not only have costs risen, but there is a high variability among companies in their “costs-per-successful-product” reaching the market.
