QUINTILES ADDS TO GLOBAL BIOSTATISTICS & INTERNATIONAL ECG MONITORING THROUGH ACQUISITIONS IN SOUTH AFRICA AND U.K.
RESEARCH TRIANGLE PARK, N.C. - June 29, 1998 - Quintiles Transnational Corp. (Nasdaq: QTRN) announced today the acquisitions of ClinData International Pty Ltd., South Africa’s leading biostatistics and data management company, and U.K.-based Cardiac Alert, which provides a centralized electrocardiogram (ECG) monitoring service for international clinical trials.
Quintiles acquired ClinData and Cardiac Alert in exchange for Quintiles Transnational stock in separate pooling of interests transactions.Each transaction is expected to be neutral to slightly accretive to Quintiles’ earnings per share.

Led by renowned biostatisticians Herman Luus, Ph.D., and Robert Schall, Ph.D., ClinData provides a complete range of data management and biostatistics services, including medical writing, to international pharmaceutical companies conducting clinical trials in Europe, South Africa and Southeast Asia. The company is based in Bloemfontein, about 250 miles southwest of Johannesburg.

Investigator sites with Cardiac Alert’s ECG monitors transmit real-time ECG signals by telephone to a central evaluation center in London, where cardiologists analyze the data and have the capability to either fax or phone back reports within 30 minutes. More than 600 sites in 26 countries utilize Cardiac Alert’s services to screen prospective patients and monitor patients involved in clinical trials.

Quintiles has entered into employment agreements with ClinData senior managers, including Dr. Herman Luus, as Managing Director, and Dr. Robert Schall and Theo Erasmus, as Directors.
