RESEARCH TRIANGLE PARK, NC - AUGUST 12, 1996 - Quintiles Transnational Corp. (Nasdaq: QTRN) today broke ground for a 171,000-square-foot clinical trials material packaging and distribution center in Bathgate, Scotland, 20 miles west of Edinburgh. The facility, which also will house a clinical data management service, is expected to be operational in fall 1997 and eventually will employ about 300 people.
The facility will specialize in the packaging and global distribution of products for randomized studies, especially those with multilingual labeling requirements. The data management group will design clinical trials, collect data and analyze the results of the trials. The growing trend of pharmaceutical companies to subcontract entire product development programs, and the increasing complexity of clinical trials packaging, are major reasons behind construction of the Bathgate facility.
"As the needs of our clients continue to evolve, so must our services and capabilities," said Dennis Gillings, Ph.D., Chairman and CEO of Quintiles Transnational Corp. "This facility will be used as a global center for data management and will package clinical trials materials and distribute them around the world. This state-of-the-art facility will put Quintiles in a unique position to meet the increasing demand for global clinical trials, which will benefit clients and patients alike."
The 33-acre Bathgate site was selected in part because of its proximity to the company's existing 300,000-square-foot facility at Quintiles Scotland Ltd. in Edinburgh. The addition of the Bathgate facility will significantly increase Quintiles' capabilities for the packaging and distribution of materials used in clinical trials.
