RESEARCH TRIANGLE PARK, NC - September 10, 1997 - Quintiles Transnational Corp. (Nasdaq: QTRN) today officially opened its 171,000-square-foot clinical trials material packaging and distribution center in Bathgate, Scotland, 20 miles west of Edinburgh.
The center specializes in the packaging and distribution of products for randomized studies, especially global studies with multilingual labeling requirements. In addition, a statistical group at the center will provide clinical study design, data collection and analysis services. The center opened with a staff of about 115 and is expected to eventually employ about 300 people.
"Speeding the development of new drugs to improve human health is the key reason this facility was constructed," Dennis Gillings, Ph.D., Chairman and CEO of Quintiles Transnational Corp., said during opening ceremonies held today. "The complexity of packaging and distributing drugs used in global clinical trials requires state-of-the-art equipment and a well-trained workforce. This center is superlative in both categories."
The 33-acre Bathgate site was selected in part because of its proximity to the company's existing 260,000-square-foot facility at Quintiles Scotland Ltd. in Edinburgh. The addition of the Bathgate facility significantly increases Quintiles' capabilities for the packaging and distribution of materials used in clinical trials. Quintiles also has a distribution center near its headquarters in North Carolina, U.S.A
