RESEARCH TRIANGLE PARK, N.C. - October 14, 1998 - Quintiles Transnational Corp. (Nasdaq: QTRN) announced today the acquisition of Q.E.D. International Inc., a New York-based provider of integrated product marketing and communication services for pharmaceutical companies in the U.S. market.

The acquisition further extends Quintiles' growing abilities to provide medical marketing and communication services nationally and globally, and to integrate those programs with product development and sales support. Q.E.D. will be part of Quintiles Medical Communications, which includes Medical Action Communications (MAC), specialists in global strategic marketing and communication services for the pharmaceutical and biotechnology industries.

Quintiles acquired Q.E.D. in exchange for Quintiles stock in a pooling of interests transaction that is expected to be neutral to slightly accretive to Quintiles' earnings per share. Q.E.D. is noted for integrated medical marketing and communications programs to build product differentiation and influence key target audiences.

"Q.E.D.'s focus on medical marketing and communication, its national reputation for creativity in building product awareness and support, and its strong management team make it an excellent addition to our group," said Stephen Bullock, CEO of Quintiles Medical Communications. "Our customers will benefit from the combination of Q.E.D.'s proven U.S. market expertise with MAC's international medical marketing and communications services."

Quintiles has entered into employment agreements with Q.E.D. senior managers, including its co-founders, President Richard Johnson, M.D., and Vice President Robert Blink. The company, which has about 50 employees at its Hawthorne, N.Y., headquarters, will be renamed QED Communications and be headed by Dr. Johnson, who will report to Bullock.

"We're proud to join Quintiles Transnational and to be able to offer our customers the knowledge, expertise and resources of this outstanding global organization," Johnson said. "As part of Quintiles Medical Communications, we can integrate our services earlier and more completely into the development and commercialization processes, which can add significant value to our customers' products."
