EDINBURGH, SCOTLAND - May 11, 1999 - Quintiles held ceremonies today to officially dedicate its 100-plus-employee clinical trial manufacturing production facility including full warehouse capacity in Livingston. This is the company's third facility in Scotland. The Livingston site, acquired last year from Boehringer Mannheim also houses a pan-European call centre staffed by multi-lingual specialists who can provide 24-hour-a-day support for clinical trials and other drug development operations.

The 58,000-square-foot Livingston facility has been fully integrated with Quintiles' nearby Bathgate facility, which specialises in clinical trial material packaging and distribution, and its Heriot-Watt Research Park facility in Riccarton, which provides services in all aspects of preclinical and pharmaceutical drug development. Together, the three sites form a Scotland-based triangle of excellence to help global pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies accelerate development of their products.

Over 100 staff will be employed there including 32 who transferred from Boehringer Mannheim. Together, Quintiles' three facilities in Scotland - all less than 15 miles apart - employ more than 800 people which makes Quintiles one of the largest employers in the region.

"In the eleven months since we acquired the Livingston site, production capability has increased four-fold through the investment in state-of-the-art manufacturing and production technology," said Joe Clancy, President of Quintiles Product Development Europe, "and the call centre offers an un-paralleled service not just in Scotland, but Europe-wide. The successful integration of Livingston with the existing facilities at Bathgate and Riccarton has been possible only because of the dedication and determination of the staff. Quintiles really is striving to provide not just a solution to customers' problems, but a quick solution. This applies across the company whether dealing with supply of material for Phase I studies, preclinical development work or full-scale manufacture of end-product."
