WALTHAM, Mass. - (BW HealthWire) - Oct. 27, 1999 - Phase Forward Incorporated today announced the signing of a worldwide software licensing and master services agreement with Quintiles Inc., the product development service group of Quintiles Transnational Corp. (Nasdaq:QTRN), to expand the use of the Internet to enhance the speed and quality of drug development.

The three-year agreement covers licensing of Phase Forward's InForm(TM) software for use by Quintiles Inc. and its affiliates in clinical trials, and joint product development, marketing, training and support initiatives. The agreement is designed to bring Internet speed to clinical trials while improving quality and efficiency - all elements needed to reduce time to market for new drugs and enhance growth in the pharmaceutical industry.

"Quintiles and Phase Forward share a vision to transform the clinical trials industry from the current process, which is largely paper-based, to the Internet," said Shiv Tasker, president and chief executive officer of Phase Forward. "The alliance of Quintiles' expertise and resources and Phase Forward's advanced Web-based solutions can change the entire clinical trials process for the better."

Phase Forward's InForm(TM) software is part of Quintiles WebCollect(SM) suite of services that allows customers to conduct clinical trials using electronic case report forms (CRF). Investigator sites can use InForm(TM) to directly enter patient data into a Web-based CRF and transmit that data instantly and securely for verification and entry into the study database. This eliminates the need to input the data on paper CRFs, mail the forms, re-enter the data and verify the data. Using InForm(TM), processes that used to take days to complete can now be done in hours or minutes.

Ludo Reynders, Ph.D., chief executive officer of Quintiles' Product Development service group, said: "Phase Forward is a leader in the application of Internet technology to improve clinical trials. Their InForm(TM) software is one element in our worldwide QUINTERNET(TM) electronic platform to bring Internet-enabled products and services to the entire product development and commercialization process.

"Using InForm(TM) as part of our WebCollect(SM) services allows our customers to have real-time access to information about their clinical trial. This potentially can save 12 to 15 weeks or more per trial when compared to a paper-based system. The end result for our customers is higher quality data faster, which is vital in bringing needed medicines to regulatory approval and patients sooner."
